L'HOMME-PAYSAGE (ALEXANDRE) est le premier volet d’un cycle dédié à mon histoire familiale (ARBORESCENCES), intimement liée à celle de l'immigration italienne en France pendant l'entre-deux guerres. Réactivant des éléments d'archives, ce travail est un essai visuel interrogeant plus globalement les notions d'héritage, d'identité, d'exil, de la perte des lieux où l'on est né, où l'on a vécu.
J'évoque l'arrivée dans les Vosges de mon père, enfant d'immigrés italiens, pendant l’entre-deux guerres.
Des plaques de Plexiglas sur lesquelles ont été reproduit le portrait de sa carte d'identité ont été disposées dans des forêts de la région de Bussang, familières à l'enfant. Ce portrait a ensuite été re-photographié au téléphone portable. Comme dans un palimpseste, troncs, feuilles d’arbres, insectes, s’entremêlent aux lignes du visage, dans un jeu de transparences, de reflets, d’ombres et de lumières. Le corps devient un lieu de passage, un univers en interaction avec l'espace et l'environnement. Une vidéo faite in situ explore le mouvement du vent dans les arbres, les vibrations de l’eau sur le visage et suggère une géographie des corps qui, peu à peu, semblent reprendre vie.

Sophie Zénon invites to re-read of the concept of historical heritage (ARBORESCENCES), integrating man with the landscape, but also the landscape with man. Reactivating archival material, this work is a visual essay that explores notions of heritage, identity, exile and the loss of the places where we were born and lived.
I talk about the arrival of her father, the son of Italian immigrants, in the Vosges (French mountain range), during the interwar period. A child's face, a static, black and white profile. This photograph is from my father's identity card, which was used to identify him as a migrant when the Italian family emigrated from Piedmont to the Vosges, almost a century ago. Extracted from his passport, the archive photo was printed on a Plexiglas plate and installed in a forest in the Bussang region, a place familiar to the child. It was then re-photographed in the foreground with an i-Phone. As the sun moves on the plate, the figure of the ancestor becomes "Man-landscape". Trunks, tree leaves, insects mix with the lines of the face, in a game of transparencies, reflections, shadows and lights. Re-photographed archive photography comes back to life. Cropping and focusing in on the skin, the detail of the mouth, a nostril, an eyelid – it also suggest the geography of the body.
